Dan Wilson is a character in Bully, and is a member of the Jocks at Bullworth Academy. He was voiced by Matt Sauerhoff.

Character description[]

Beta Jocks

Dan being tackled by Jimmy, with Bob in the background

Dan is a small jock with bright red hair and light brown eyes. He wears the school blue letterman sweater, tan slacks, and dark blue and white blue shoes. In the winter, he is dressed nearly the same but wears black fingerless gloves and brown boots. His facial features are somewhat coarse, and when he's angry his entire face contorts. He has a strong and fairly deep voice. It is presumed he's one of the older students and is just small for his age. In fact, he's shorter than his younger brother Thad.

Beta appearance[]

Dan originally wore a blue tracksuit jacket with white edges, but was changed to a blue sweater similar to Kirby's, to be better recognized as a Jock. His appearance in general was the same, only with less detail.

Characteristics[]

Dan is the older brother of the nerd Thad Carlson.[1] A line Dan speaks after having been swirlied implies that he left the Nerds a few years ago[2]. How he came to join the Jocks is never discussed. He takes particular enjoyment in bullying Earnest, implying that his departure from the Nerds was over a falling out with him.

In present day, playing football and bullying weaker kids define Dan's personality and, by his own claim, life. He plays on the Bullworth Bullhorns, and the number on his jersey is 1. The position isn't outright stated, but between his small size and his mentions of his tackles and sacks, he most likely plays cornerback.

Dan's personality is mostly focused on football and bullying other kids. He wants to eventually join the NFL, but doesn't know if he'll ever be good enough. He takes great pride that he's on the football team, though, often bringing it up to make himself sound better and sometimes using it as an excuse to try and get out of trouble, or to get a tougher kid to not pick on him. He has so few ticks and inflections in his speaking style that it stands out for simpleness. He's somewhat foul-mouthed, and his favorite insult is 'prick.' When trying to start trouble he heavily favors threats of violence over insults. Despite his love of picking fights he's rather pleasant towards people he's on good terms with.

Role in game[]

Dan has few cutscene appearances, though he can be seen with the rest of the Jocks during several missions in Chapter 4. During The Candidate, if the mission is completed the camera pans across Dan watching the speech looking bored and glum. He can be seen in Carnival Date with Kirby (sometimes armed with a baseball bat) walking past Jimmy and Pinky. During Defender of the Castle, he along with Kirby, are in their football gear and attempt to break the barricade on the observatory track and bust into the Observatory. He later gets knocked out by an explosive-rigged football thrown to him by Kirby in the The Big Game mission.

Removed content[]

Dan and Kirby were once planned to have a larger role in Carnival Date. From their dialogue files it can be deduced that Dan and Kirby challenge Jimmy to beat Dan's high score[3] on the High Striker game. Dialogue for Dan and Kirby walking off laughing at Jimmy for being weak and dialogue for Pinky complimenting him on handling them both exist - this may have been similar to the part of the mission Character Sheets where Jimmy plays Troy at ro-sham-bo, but losing doesn't fail the mission.

Trivia[]

  • In the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows versions of the game, Dan's yearbook photo is taken from a beta version of the character. In the Nintendo Wii version and in the Anniversary Edition, his pose is changed to look just like the other students.
  • Early screenshots of Dan show him wearing a tracksuit jacket rather than a sweater.
  • Dan, Bryce and Karen share a series of errors in their GREE (greeting) dialogue. Their GREEAF (greeting an adult female) is greeting an adult male. The GREEGW is supposed to be Jimmy's girlfriends greeting him (greeting - girl won), but for Bryce, Dan and Karen it is greeting an adult female. The GREEAM line is usually for greeting an adult male. Karen doesn't have this line at all but for Bryce and Dan it's switched with their GREEHG (greeting a hot girl) line.
  • In addition to the above, all of Dan and Bryce's lines complimenting clothing are out of order. For example, their GREEPHCL (likes haircut) line is actually a compliment about a hat, while their GREEPHL (likes hat) refers to shoes.
