Sleeping is a game mechanic in Bully.

Description[]

Gameplay in Bully is broken up into days, and to advance a day, Jimmy must either go to sleep or pass out at 2 a.m. and wake up in the same spot.

Jimmy can only sleep in his room in the Boys' Dorm or a Safehouse, starting at 7 p.m. and ending at 2 a.m.

If Jimmy has not returned to his room by 2 a.m., he will pass out where he is standing. If he passes out, he may wake up in his underwear or missing ammunition for some of his inventory weapons.

Starting at 1 a.m. the game's interface begins to change, reflecting exhaustion on Jimmy's part. The screen gets blurry, and voices sound like they're coming from a distance and have echoes. Jimmy will also hang his head and sometimes shake it to try and clear it. The later the time gets, the more severe the effects on the interface are.

Beta changes[]

Articles about Bully from before the original release described features that were not included in the final version of the game. The front door of the Boys' Dorm was supposed to lock at midnight, and Jimmy was to have to sneak in a window. The window he was to sneak in through and a dumpster he can climb on to reach it can still be found behind the dorm, but serve no purpose. Articles also claimed that he would be able to sleep on a park bench if he couldn't make it back to the dorm; this too was removed from the final version of the game.
